Zenless Zone Zero is primarily set in the Hollows, where monsters emerge due to Ether's corruption. However, since New Eridu discovered a way to profit from Ether, the government, companies, and gangs are all vying to exploit it.

As a result, some individuals become Hollow Raiders, searching for treasures and valuables inside the Hollows.

Playable characters in ZZZ all engage in activities within the Hollows, indicating that they possess sufficient or outstanding Ether Aptitudes. Proxies can form partnerships with Agents from various backgrounds, including Hollow Raiders, construction companies, private institutions, government officials, and security officers.

Initially, characters in ZZZ did not have specific roles but were classified by Attack Type. However, this system was confusing for many players. Therefore, HoYoverse decided to assign a role to each Agent while still displaying their Attack Type in the respective Agent's stat info.
