An AI-generated video, allegedly showcasing one of the stadiums of the 2034 FIFA World Cup in Saudi Arabia, has gone viral, deceiving millions of people across social media.
The video, which shows a lit-up football stadium built on top of a skyscraper, was shared by thousands of accounts, with many believing the video to be an official design released by the Saudi government.
However, officially confirmed information is that the video is fake and not affiliated with any World Cup infrastructure. This design is completely fake and bears no resemblance to anything Saudi Arabia is planning. It appears in no official sources," a source told AFP.
Whereas Saudi Arabia has released superhero levels of urban projects, such as The Line, a super city under construction, none of these official plans in Saudi Arabia are the viral design.
Several French media outlets, who previously reported on the video, deleted or corrected their reporting about the video.
According to AFP, the account on Instagram, @hyporaultraworks, created the video. The creator wrote back to AFP to confirm the video was their design, made for fun.
“What started as a simple AI concept has taken on a life of its own — over 50 million views later, our design has gone global,” the user wrote on Facebook, adding that it had “nothing to do with any Saudi project.”
Saudi Arabia is currently investing heavily in infrastructure and development projects as it prepares to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, part of its broader vision to position itself as a global hub for sports and tourism.
