Among Us, one of the most popular multiplayer games in recent years, is making the leap into 3D with a virtual reality (VR) version. Known for its exciting mix of teamwork and deception, the game takes place in a spaceship where players must complete tasks while impostors secretly try to eliminate them.
The shift to 3D is intended to provide a more immersive experience, but game developers have a huge task in designing a good Heads-Up Display (HUD) for VR.
A HUD is a staple in any game, and it shows key details like maps, tasks, and player status. In the initial 2D version of Among Us, players had no trouble seeing these on their screens.
In VR, though, it's not so simple. Because players are within a simulated environment, classical HUD features tend to come off as awkward and can interfere with immersion. This has left the developers with the tricky design task of having to present all needed information without saturating the player's line of sight.
Among Us 3D developers have also been trying several methods to get around this problem. One involves the use of floating menus used only when there is a requirement, eliminating excessive distractions.
A second method of doing this has been by locating important information within in-game items so that they can be easily interacted naturally with the environment. They want to ensure that players should be able to access all information they require yet still feel embedded in the game world.
Even with these difficulties, the developers are dedicated to offering a seamless and immersive VR experience. Given that Among Us is already a favourite among players, there's huge anticipation for this new release.
