OpenAI has officially announced that ChatGPT will no longer be available on WhatsApp after January 15, 2026, based on a new policy from Meta. Meta's policy change affects the 1-800-ChatGPT extension that connects with over 50 million users on WhatsApp.

According to OpenAI, the move comes after Meta introduced new policies that prevent ChatGPT’s ongoing integration with WhatsApp. “While we would have much preferred to continue serving you on WhatsApp, we are focused on making the transition as easy as possible,” the company said in its Instagram post.

Users are advised to download ChatGPT for Android, iOS or on the desktop to continue chatting or access the AI tool over the web or ChatGPT Atlas for macOS. These versions will be able to provide users with added functionality like voice chats, deep research tools and file uploads.

Notably, if you would like to retain your chat history, OpenAI recommends linking your ChatGPT account with WhatsApp ahead of the January 15 deadline using the contact profile for 1-800-ChatGPT.

However, since WhatsApp does not currently support chat exports, you will not get previous conversations automatically transferred to ChatGPT after the deadline given.

ChatGPT will continue to be available on WhatsApp up until January 15, 2026, whereas OpenAI has plans to send reminders to users to ensure a smooth transition for users.
