In an effort to let developers explore its intricacies and make it compatible for their own artificial intelligence (AI) innovations, Elon Musk’s xAI has released Grok 2.5 on the open-source platform Hugging Face.
Musk announced on X (formerly Twitter): “The @xAI Grok 2.5 model, which was our best model last year, is now open source.” He also mentioned that Grok 3 will also be open-sourced in around six months.
AI engineer Tim Kellogg noted that the Grok licence is “custom with some anti-competitive terms.”
Grok, which is also integrated into X (recently merged with xAI), has sparked miltiple controversies so far this year.
The chatbot grabbed headlines after it appeared to fixate on “white genocide” conspiracy theories, questioned the Holocaust’s death toll, and even referred to itself as “MechaHitler.” In response, xAI published its system prompts on GitHub to address these issues.
While Musk has described the upcoming Grok 4 as a “maximally truth-seeking AI,” it seems the model checks Musk’s social media account before responding to contentious questions.
This raises questions about the objectivity of the AI and its alignment with Musk's views. As the landscape of AI continues to evolve, Grok remains a focal point of discussion and scrutiny.
