Google has rebranded the Gemini Extension to simply “apps” as part of its latest update. The change was announced during Google’s Live event and is rolling out in beta version 16.8 of the Google app on Android.

The Gemini AI assistant connects with different services like Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube, and Google Home to provide seamless access to user data. Previously called Gemini Extensions, these integrations are now labelled as “apps” in the Google app.

Moreover, users will find this the extension with a new name under account menu, then settings, to enable or disabling these tools.

Google has also updated the wording across the platform:

Although this update does not alter the way Gemini AI works, it has affected the branding and its reputation. Some users might prefer the word "apps" less for applications such as utilities, which offer phone-based features.

Another small UI tweak is seen on the Gemini homescreen, where the model picker is now inside a small pill-shaped button with a downward arrow, enhancing alignment and usability.

This change is still rolling out and hasn't yet appeared on the Gemini website. Google wants to make its AI tools more accessible and easier to understand by using commonly recognised terms.
