Google has confirmed that Gemini will become the default replacement for Google Assistant on the majority of Android phones later in 2025.
The decision follows as the company continues to improve its AI assistant, which will now be the default on new devices.
Gemini to become default AI assistant on Android devices
Users will begin to receive upgrade notifications in the next few months, warning them of the change. Nevertheless, phones with Android 9 or earlier, or devices sporting less than 2GB of RAM, will retain the current Assistant experience.
Most of the latest Android phones, such as those by Pixel, Samsung, OnePlus, and Motorola, have already made Gemini the default assistant. Google claims that millions of users have already switched to Gemini since its release in 2024.
Gemini initially had some missing features, but Google has been filling the gap by introducing features such as lock screen access and phone control features.
Before fully replacing Assistant, Google plans to improve Gemini’s capabilities, ensuring a smooth transition for users who rely on voice commands.
The company highlights that AI advancements are driving a new era in technology, making interactions more natural and personalised.
Google is also going to expand Gemini to more devices such as smartwatches, automobiles, tablets, and headphones. It has already shown up on Pixel Buds and will make its way to Wear OS soon.
Google is also working on a Gemini-fueled experience for smart speakers, displays, and TVs with Nest Mini and Audio testing.
