The government of Pakistan has announced the suspension of mobile phone and internet services in certain areas on November 24, 2024. The Ministry of Interior issued these orders to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), citing security concerns as the reason for the move.
The decision aims to address anticipated issues in specific regions, as the country faces ongoing political protests and unrest.
Government directs PTA to suspend mobile and internet services
According to PTA sources, the Ministry of Interior had issued that notification on November 23, 2024. While mobile and internet services are operational without any issues today, it is being shut down in several cities tomorrow.
This decision has created a kind of contradiction, as the earlier PTA chairman said no service suspension orders had been issued.
The sources also stated that the final implementation depends on the evolving security situation. There remains a slight possibility that the suspension might be reconsidered, though it is currently seen as unlikely.
Such measures have been used by the government all over history to protect the public and not misuse the communication means, especially during unrest times.
The mobile and internet service suspension comes at a time when protests and political activities are ongoing by PTI, which have heightened security concerns throughout the country. Such steps are often controversial but taken with the objective of maintaining law and order.
