Taking pragmatic steps to keep up with globally exercised vehicle regulations, the Sindh government of Pakistan has introduced new security-featured number plates for over 3 million four-wheeler owners in the province.
Notice issued by the government in this regard stated that the new registration plates are introduced to ensure vehicle safety measures and uniformity.
Citing Excise and Taxation Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla, Dawn reported that the institution kicked off the first phase in April 2022, issuing the retro-reflective number plates with the new security feature only to new vehicles.
Notable among the security features on the new registration plates, as noted by the excise minister, are aluminium sheets, bar code and the registration number which is designed to be readable even during night-time.
“Now, we have launched the second phase for the old vehicles,” said Chawla, underscoring that the government incurred no charges for the procurement of new number plates.
Those committing noncompliance by keeping old number plates, after the April 3 deadline decided by the government, will be bound to face legal action, which might lead to vehicle detention.
“The action will include impounding of the vehicle,” he warned of the snap checking on roads.
More than three million old private and commercial vehicles in the province need to apply for and obtain new registration plates.
