Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday announced a countrywide push for electric vehicles (EVs) at a high-level meeting in Islamabad.

The government will provide electric bikes to top students for free, and easy loans will be available for e-rickshaws and electric loaders for employment and local manufacturing reasons.

PM stated that the shift to EVs can save Pakistan billions of dollars in fuel imports and help with environmental protection.

He instructed all departments to develop a plan of action to make EVs affordable for the average citizen.

Through this effort, over 100,000 electric bikes and more than 300,000 electric loaders will be on the market through low financing and simple terms for purchase.

The prime minister informed attendees that students graduating from all educational boards, including the Federal Board, with First Divisions would receive free e-bikes.

Of total bicycles projected, 25% are to be set aside for women. He also instructed that Pakistan’s share of e-bikes from Balochistan be increased to 10% to balance the regional need for e-bikes.
