Islamabad's Excise and Taxation Department has announced a monumental change to its vehicle registration policy, which has adopted a new model that resembles the one in the United States.
Under the new model, registration numbers will still exist, but they won't belong to the vehicle anymore; they will now belong to the owner.
According to the official notification, each vehicle owner will receive a unique number plate that stays with their name and can be attached to any vehicle they own.
Regardless of the age or condition of the car (whether a new-car registration or existing), all vehicles will be subject to the updated system.
If the vehicle is sold, the number belonging to the seller will be removed from the sold vehicle and given to the new owner as a different number. This process does strengthen ownership tracking and improves system managing.
The owner can keep their registration number for a year even if they don't own a vehicle; however, after a year, if the owner cannot attach it to another vehicle, then the number is cancelled and returned to the system.
The Director General of Excise and Taxation Islamabad stated that the current policy will streamline the registration process.
