Karachi residents now have the option of vehicle registration services during the weekends, as the Sindh government has now introduced extended hours for the Motor Registration Wing at Civic Centre.

A source from the Sindh government confirmed the new weekend hours, which run from 10:00am to 4:00pm, confirmed by Sindh’s Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla, who said that the extension to the days of operation came after public demand and interest in accessing an important service.

The weekend availability of vehicle registration is expected to reduce the heavy rush associated with a weekday operation on weekdays.

Residents will now be able to access the Civic Centre on the weekends and register their ownership transfers of motorcycles and number plates for cars and bikes and pay their registration fee without the wait of a weekday queue.

Excise and Taxation Sindh Director General Iqbal Ahmed Laghari stated, "The idea is to better serve the public and lessen the load on our staff and facilities during the week when the public service may be stressed."

He said, "We have been hearing that from the public, and the provision of the extended days is to make things easier for people."

Chawla’s announcement comes on the heels of increasing frustration among the public for several reasons regarding the phasing in of Sindh's new ‘Ajrak’ number plates.

Long delays, long lines, and strict enforcement will bog down many a car and bike owner today.

In recent weeks, more than 12,000 vehicles in Karachi were seized for not having the new plates. People have also complained about the high cost and production delays linked to the plate change.
