MG Motors is urging Pakistan's auto sector to consider restructuring pricing mechanisms and delivering real value into cars for the customer as Pakistan begins launching its New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025-30.

The company argued that new technologies, especially Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), remain out of reach for consumers even when backed by government aid.

Speaking to the media in Lahore, MG Motors General Manager Marketing Syed Asif Ahmed welcomed the new policy but insisted it had not enabled the private sector to make hybrid cars affordable. "Hybrid cars have become luxury items and not practical solutions," he noted.

During the address, Ahmed showed price-checking sources and defined that some HEV SUVs are priced as high as Rs16 million, and even models with five seats have ranges between Rs9.6 and Rs12 million, which an overwhelming number of buyers could not afford.

Ahmed stated that Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) are the best and most affordable for urban driving; they have both electric drive and petrol backup that provide flexibility and reduced costs of fuel.

MG Motors has introduced its MG HS PHEV to support the shift to PHEVs as Pakistan's first locally assembled plug-in hybrid SUV.

The MG HS PHEV has a 16.6 kWh battery and a 1.5L turbo engine, guaranteeing an electric-only range of 52 km and a total of 260 horsepower. It is priced below Rs10 million, making it one of the best-value vehicles in its category. So far, the company has sold around 2,000 PHEVs out of 16,000 total MG vehicles in Pakistan.

Ahmed also criticised the pricing gap, noting that hybrids in Pakistan cost up to 45% more than petrol cars, while globally, the difference is only 10%. He urged other automakers to follow MG’s lead in offering better value and supporting the environment through affordable hybrid options.
