As the demand for smartphones has been increasing at a rapid pace worldwide, Pakistan would be the last to become self-sufficient in mobile manufacturing to cater to the demand.
In contrast to what it seemed, the local production of smartphones in Pakistan rose by 28% in December 2024 in the wake of increasing demand for cheaper smartphones.
The production of locally manufactured or assembled mobile phones increased by 28% in December 2024 amid high demand for low-priced smartphones.
“Pakistan fulfilled 95% of its mobile phone demand through local manufacturing/assembly in 2024, compared to a last five-year (2019-2023) average of 67% and an eight-year (2016-2023) average of 47%,” said a research report of Topline Securities.
Citing data released by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Dawn reported that the local smartphone makers in the country manufactured 2.95 million units, registering a 28% rise on a month-on-month basis in December 2024 alone.
Regarding the import of smartphones carried out to address the demand and supply shortages, it underwent a 50% uptick in the first half of FY25, taking the sales to $52.9m compared to $35.2m in the same period in FY24.
The report stated that the total sales of locally manufactured mobile phones in the entire 2024 (calendar year) were 31.38m units, up 47% over CY2023.
Out of over 31m units produced domestically in Pakistan, 59% (18.64m units) were 4G smartphones, and the remaining 41% (12.74m units) were 2G phones.
