Every year, Apple Maps gets better, and the newest features in iOS 26 should make it even better. Apple may be working on adding two new features to its Maps app, based on recent findings in the iOS beta code.

These possible new features were found in the iOS 26 beta code, and Apple iOS Developer Steve Moser recently shared details about them. Apple hasn't previously revealed either feature.

It is anticipated that the first feature—natural language search—will completely transform how users engage with Apple Maps.

Moser said the code suggests that users will soon be able to "Search the Way You Talk" and "Use natural language to find places like 'Best coffee shops with free wi-fi.'"

Apple Intelligence, which powers this feature, has already had a big impact on other Apple apps.

The second feature, thermal management, may be especially helpful when navigating turn-by-turn.

Moser found that Apple Maps prevents the iPhone from overheating by turning off the screen while active navigation is on.

In order to guarantee that directions are always visible, Apple Maps currently requires the iPhone's display to stay on while active navigation is underway.

However, when the device is mounted on a dashboard and charging, this can lead to overheating, particularly on a sunny day.

Although users of the most recent iOS 26 beta cannot access either feature at this time, it is hoped that they will be added in a future update or the public release.

It's interesting to note that users reported that the thermal management feature appeared to be implemented already after publication, appearing in both iOS 18 and iOS 26.

The search upgrade isn't yet accessible, though. It will be interesting to watch these features in action, and as Moser points out, the new thermal feature might be especially helpful in some circumstances.
