iOS 17.2, on the brink of its release, has unveiled a surprising feature in its release candidate recently seeded to developers and beta testers. The comprehensive release notes highlight an unanticipated addition: "Qi2 charger support for all iPhone 13 models and iPhone 14 models."
This enhancement, noted by 9to5Mac, signals a significant shift as Qi2 represents the latest wireless charging standard by the Wireless Power Consortium, enabling compatible devices to charge at 15W, a doubling of the previous standard's 7.5W.
While this new capacity still falls short of the fastest proprietary systems found in leading Android devices, it marks a considerable power upgrade.
Previously, MagSafe-certified chargers allowed iPhone users to charge at 15W, but other wireless chargers were limited to 7.5W for iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models.
With the impending iOS 17.2 update, a broader range of chargers will be capable of delivering 15W charging power to these iPhones, potentially offering more affordable options for users.
It's important to note that the release notes do not explicitly confirm that the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 lines will charge at 15W with Qi2 chargers. However, the inclusion of support for this standard strongly suggests that they will.
As for the iPhone 15 line, it already supports Qi2, setting a precedent as one of the earliest smartphone series to adopt this standard.
Expected to arrive around mid-December, iOS 17.2 is anticipated not only to introduce Qi2 support but also to feature Apple's new Journal app, a Translate option for the iPhone 15 Pro's Action button, App Store layout adjustments, and more.
