The artificial intelligence (AI) frenzy sparked by the advent of ChatGPT has made its way across industries and countless facets of life, with education emerging as one of its greatest beneficiaries. AI empowers both quick and slow learners to grasp topics of their choice with the simplicity of a single prompt. Pakistan, too, has embraced its share of this AI revolution, marking a significant milestone in its educational sphere.

While OpenAI’s chatbot continues to dominate the AI space unchallenged, despite notable rival offerings from tech giants like Microsoft and Google, Pakistan's teaching and learning landscape lacks a tool that truly compels students to learn, rather than simply feeding them answers to wordy prompts.

This is where Khanmigo steps in, revolutionising education in Pakistan through its diverse generative AI (GenAI) capabilities.

Launched by Khan Academy, a global online education platform, Khanmigo caters to a wide array of academic needs. From writing essays and emails to solving complex mathematics problems and distilling intricate scientific concepts into digestible explanations, the AI tool promises to be a game-changer.

What sets Khanmigo apart is its emphasis on fostering understanding. Unlike other AI tools, it does not merely assist users with answers but ensures they comprehend the core concepts behind the problems they aim to solve.

Speaking to Gadinsider, Zeeshan Hasan, CEO of Khan Academy Pakistan (KAP), explained: “The sole purpose of designing Khanmigo is to make teachers spend more time teaching and less time preparing what to teach.”

KAP board members revealed that, as part of its initial pilot programme, Khanmigo will serve as an AI teaching assistant for educators. This effort involves collaborations with institutions such as AKHUWAT, CARE Foundation, TCF, Foundation Public School, Education Trust Nasra School, among others.

Looking ahead, KAP plans to expand its reach. In the second phase of the Student Pilot, set to launch in 2025, Khanmigo will be introduced to a wider range of private academic institutions, enabling it to serve an even larger number of students across the country.

For teachers, Khanmigo offers advanced features such as lesson planning tools and personalised feedback systems. These tools streamline classroom management tasks while ensuring student engagement remains high throughout lessons.

Khan Academy has already established itself as a pioneer in online education in Pakistan, supporting millions of students and thousands of teachers nationwide. By leveraging cutting-edge AI technology, the platform seeks to address the acute shortage of quality teachers and emerge as a formidable competitor to popular tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot.

"With Pakistan's population growing by the equivalent of Karachi's size every four years, it's very difficult and expensive to produce quality teachers to address the ever-growing number of students," remarked KAP Chairperson Osman Rashid.

Currently, Khanmigo is available in its initial rollout phase, supporting only English and Urdu. However, plans for expansion are already underway. Hasan noted, “Its wider rollout over time will observe the addition of further local and regional languages like Sindhi, Punjabi, Balochi, Pashto, and many other languages spoken in different areas of the country.”

Khanmigo was officially unveiled during the launch ceremony of Khan Academy Pakistan at the Marriott Hotel in Karachi on Thursday. The event highlighted the platform’s mission to address the country’s literacy and numeracy challenges, as well as the barriers to quality education.

“The launch of Khan Academy Pakistan marks a transformative step towards equitable education. Our mission is to empower students and teachers nationwide with innovative tools that inspire learning and growth. We believe that by addressing educational inequities, we can create opportunities that pave the way for a prosperous and inclusive Pakistan,” said Hasan during the event.

As the needs of Generation Z shape the future, adopting innovative tools like Khanmigo becomes imperative. This tech-savvy generation requires teaching methods that resonate with their interests and move away from outdated practices.

Education drives innovation, and tools like Khanmigo stand poised to transform Pakistan’s education system. By harnessing AI to support both teachers and students, it holds the potential to bridge the gaps in access and quality, paving the way for a brighter and more inclusive future.
