Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz has notified the establishment of dedicated lanes, termed “diamond lanes,” for motorcyclists on all major roads in Lahore.

Recently, in a meeting, the Punjab CM discussed the concept with cabinet members and directed Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb to oversee its implementation. The major aim of these “diamond lanes” is to reduce the increasing number of severe motorcycle accidents.

She emphasised that head injuries among motorcyclists are a leading cause of fatalities and long-term disabilities. Since motorcycles are a primary mode of transportation for the majority, ensuring the safety of riders is a priority.

Recently, senior officials, including the Director General of the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Athar Waheed, analysed the city’s main roads. They decided to implement the project on three-lane roads, beginning with Ferozepur Road as a pilot project.

In response, the CTO has formed specialised teams from the traffic police, having the aim to collaborate with relevant departments, including the LDA and the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA), to prepare a feasibility study.

The CTO stated: “We are working towards creating separate lanes for motorcyclists on key roads in the city.” He added that these lanes, named “diamond lanes,” would be exclusively for motorcycle riders.

Moreover, there will be awareness campaigns to guide bikers on the importance of using these lanes. It is important to note that other vehicles entering these lanes will face strict fines.
