In a significant move, the federal government has declared that fuel prices in Pakistan will not increase for the next 15 days.
This was decided in a cabinet meeting in Islamabad, presided over by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The decline in international oil prices will be used to fund development schemes rather than passing the advantage on to the people.
Petrol price in Pakistan
Petrol will remain available at Rs254.63 per litre, and high-speed diesel will remain at Rs258.64 per litre. The government plans to utilise the saved amount to enhance infrastructure, particularly in Balochistan.
One of the major projects is the upgradation of the N-25 Highway or the RCD Highway. It connects Chaman, Quetta, Kallat, Khuzdar and Karachi. This road will now be converted into a dual carriageway and upgraded to motorway standards.
Products | Existing price | New price | Increase/Decrease |
Petrol | Rs254.63 | Rs254.63 | +0.00 |
High-Speed Diesel | Rs258.64 | Rs258.64 | +0.00 |
The prime minister also announced the development of two new motorways, the M-6 from Sukkur to Hyderabad and the M-9 from Hyderabad to Karachi. The projects will be financed by the savings on fuel prices, he said.
The Kachhi Canal Phase 2 will also be completed on these funds. The canal will irrigate thousands of acres of land in Balochistan and bring prosperity to the province.
PM Shehbaz Sharif asserted that Pakistan's growth was linked to the growth of Balochistan and vowed an equal share of resources across all four provinces.
The changes to the Petroleum Levy Ordinance 1961 were also endorsed by the cabinet, which would contribute to raising national revenue. A Sustainable Investment Sukuk Framework was also authorised to raise finance through domestic Islamic bonds.
