The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has authorised a uniform tariff reduction of up to Rs1.16 per unit for the fiscal year 2025-26.
The federal government requested this, and Nepra held a public hearing on Tuesday. The approved price has now been submitted to the government for formal notification.
Under the new pricing structure, domestic electricity consumers, especially in the lower usage categories, will receive measurable decreases to their power bills.
According to Nepra's order, protected domestic users that use 1 to 100 units per month will now be charged Rs10.54 per unit, down from Rs11.69. Similarly, protected users that consume 101-200 units will now be charged Rs13.01 per unit, down from Rs14.16.
Also on protected users will see reductions, for instance, those that consume 301-400 units will be charged Rs37.99 per unit, down from Rs39.05. High usage households (that consume over 700 units) will now see their price decrease to Rs47.69 from Rs48.84.
Meanwhile, life-line users who consume up to 50 units a month will still be charged the subsidised amount of Rs3.95, and the same for users between 51-100 units.
Moreover, the Rs1.16 per unit cut will benefit general services, agricultural tube wells, and street lighting, while a Rs1.15 per unit reduction is granted to industrial consumers.
This reduction in the electricity tariff in Pakistan for FY25-26 will be supported by a government subsidy worth Rs 249 billion, along with prior-year adjustments of Rs 58.68 billion to be recovered next year. Nepra also pointed out that tariff rationalisation does not create any extra revenue for the government.
