The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved a positive uniform adjustment of Rs1.96 per unit in Quarterly Tariff Adjustments (QTAs) for distribution companies (Discos) and Karachi Electric (KE) for the first quarter of FY 2024-25.
The adjustment increment will help the power regulator recover an additional amount of Rs1.187 billion from consumers as part of their electricity bills during December 2024.
The decision to hike the per-unit electricity cost was taken during a hearing held on November 20, 2024, in accordance with the schedule. The ministry of energy, power division discos, CPPA-G, K-Electric, and other stakeholders attended the hearing, as did the general public.
Nepra explained that the currently implemented fourth QTA of Rs1.74 per unit for FY 2024-25 set to expire in November implies that the net impact will be about Rs0.22 per unit.
Citing a commentator, Business Recorder reported that instead of December 2024, it was requested to apply the approved power tariff hike from the yearly quarter starting from January 2025 to save consumers from enduring the burden of tariff hike for a month.
Arif Bilwani, a representative of small and medium manufacturers, submitted that the dropping demand in all DISCOs should be investigated to uncover the reason behind drowning sales.
He further urged the power regulator to heed the load-shedding practices in the country.
