The federal government has officially started a national project focused on the advancement of artificial intelligence development across Pakistan.

Notably, the project is designed to develop human capital and support AI startups within Pakistan’s “Digital Pakistan” framework.

The technology of artificial intelligence is one of the most important technologies of the future. It enables computers to make smart decisions, analyse data, and solve problems quicker than humans.

Countries around the world are investing in artificial intelligence, and now, Pakistan is jump-starting a national initiative for artificial intelligence development.

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has completed all arrangements to implement the AI project. The Planning Commission has approved the project design (PC-1) with a total funding of Rs534.6 million.

In implementing the new AI initiative, the ministry will establish AI hubs and training centres across Pakistan and improve existing National Incubation Centres (NICs) in seven selected cities to serve as AI centres. These initiatives will increase AI infrastructure and allow students and professionals to learn the latest digital technology skills.

The project has some big goals:

  • Training 20,000 students in basic AI skills
  • Funding 150 AI-based startups with grants
  • Training 500 professionals in advanced AI

In the 2025–26 fiscal year, the government will set up two AI hubs, organise 3,000 workshops, and hold two national awareness events to spread knowledge about AI.

Officials said the programme will follow a transparent and responsible AI governance framework to make sure it is used ethically.
