The Federal government has announced a new deadline to block illegal virtual private networks (VPNs) in Pakistan amid an alarming rise in the utilisation of VPNs all across the country due to severe internet disruptions over the past few months.

The interior ministry issued a statement, raising concerns regarding VPNs that are increasingly being exploited by terrorists to perform illegal activities and facilitating illegal financial translations, endangering the country's integrity.

VPN users are directed to register by November 30.

The interior ministry stated: “Off late, an alarming fact has been identified, wherein VPNs are used by terrorists to obscure and conceal their communications. VPNs are also being used for discreetly accessing pornographic and blasphemous content.”

It is highlighted that Pakistan has become a leading country to visit violent and adult websites using VPNs, however, these alarming trends justify the ban of unauthorised VPNs to eliminate great risks posed by them.

Thus, it is requested to block all the illegal VPNs operating all across the country to avoid registered VPNs from being affected.
