In a development indicating the country's incredible progress in smartphone tech, Pakistan has successfully developed a fully secure mobile phone specifically designed for government officials.

Also dubbed a 'made-in-Pakistan phone', the device has been created under a pilot project by the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC).

What truly makes this phone a 'made-in-Pakistan' product is that all of its hardware and software components are engineered locally.

According to NTC, the secure handset operates on a specially developed operating system that does not connect to the internet, which minimises the risk of cyber intrusions.

All applications on the phone are locally developed, and it supports SIM cards from any Pakistani telecom operator.

Can Pakistan's first secure phone be hacked or called on?

Another feature that guarantees the intensive protection from all sorts of cyber attacks and hackers' interception, calls can only be made to another secure handset of the same type, and the phone lacks a backup feature, making data extraction impossible in cases of theft or compromise.

NTC officials assured that communication through the device cannot be intercepted or monitored, thereby protecting sensitive conversations among government personnel.

In the first phase of the pilot project, ten units of this secure mobile phone have been produced, and mass production will require additional funding to expand the initiative across various government departments.

NTC officials also highlighted that commercial communication platforms like WhatsApp are not secure, as service providers can access user conversations.

This development marks a significant step towards enhancing cybersecurity for Pakistan's governmental communications.
