In what appears to be a move aimed at deterring illicit activities and online scams, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated a stern crackdown on non-PTA mobile phones (smartphones that are not registered with PTA).
Part of its fresh clampdown on non-PTA devices operating all over Pakistan, the telecom regulator has also issued a warning to millions of users regarding the imminent ban.
Considering that fraudulent activities are often carried out through noncompliant devices, mostly prevalent in local markets, this move is part of a broader effort to enforce regulations across Pakistan.
That said, devices not approved through the Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking System (DIRBS) system are facing immediate blocking from local networks.
The ban makes sure that only registered and verified phones are allowed to access voice, SMS, and data services in Pakistan.
Owing to their low prices, such devices mostly attract low-income buyers or those with no need for a SIM card, resulting from unpaid taxes and customs duties.
These devices pose significant risks, including sudden loss of network access and connectivity issues.
To avoid their non-PTA phones from facing a ban, the PTA has urged consumers to verify their device promptly by checking their phone’s 15-digit IMEI number with *#06# and confirming it on the PTA website or via SMS to 8484.
