Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has expanded its operational fleet with the addition of its 11th Airbus 320, equipped with new engines, as part of its efforts to improve network and product quality.

The newly refurbished aircraft, registered as AP-BOM, rolled out from the hangar with fresh paint and upgraded interiors, the PIA spokesperson announced.

PIA fleet expansion to boost performance and services

This expansion is part of a larger plan to boost the airline’s performance and reputation. The PIA fleet will soon include long-grounded Boeing 777 and ATR aircraft, which are expected to further enhance the airline’s network and services.

Recently, PIA also introduced an in-flight internet system on domestic flights, aiming to provide better services to passengers.

“Ensuring flight punctuality and offering safe, high-quality services remain our top priorities,” the spokesperson stated. PIA has implemented measures to achieve 90% regularity in its flight schedules while expanding the operational fleet and upgrading its products.

Minister for privatisation Abdul Aleem Khan praised PIA’s progress, calling the resumption of flights to Europe a “significant milestone” for the airline’s privatisation efforts.

Starting January 10, 2025, PIA will resume flights to Europe, beginning with Paris, following the EU lifting its 2020 ban on the airline due to aviation compliance issues.

The European ban reportedly caused PIA annual losses of Rs40 billion. The resumption of flights to Europe is expected to strengthen the airline’s case for privatisation. The government plans to relaunch the privatisation process after earlier bids fell short of expectations.
