The Punjab government is launching a new initiative aimed at addressing air pollution and creating job opportunities for the unemployed. The plan includes introducing an e-taxi service, which will provide online taxi drivers with electric vehicles (EVs) at affordable rates. This initiative seeks to tackle the significant air pollution caused by vehicle emissions.
Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan shared details about the scheme, revealing the number of online taxi drivers whose vehicles will be converted to EVs.
These EVs will be made available to drivers through down payments or convenient instalment plans, encouraging wider participation in the programme.
Khan emphasised that the conversion to electric taxis will not only reduce exhaust emissions but also benefit drivers financially. Studies indicate that drivers could save up to 40% on costs simply by switching to electric vehicles.
The transition from conventional vehicles to electric taxis offers several advantages:
- It is a significant step towards a cleaner environment.
- It reduces fuel costs for drivers.
- It enhances the economic prospects of drivers.
To combat rising pollution levels, this programme also aims to meet the growing demand for online taxi services in Punjab’s urban areas.
