The government has announced the Nisab for Zakat for 2025, Islamic year 1445-46 A.H, setting it at Rs179,689.
It implies that those having savings of Rs179,689 or above in their bank accounts will automatically have Zakat deducted. The date of deduction is likely to be March 1 or 2, 2025, subject to moon sighting.
The Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Security on February 26, 2025, issued a notification to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and Zakat Collection & Controlling Agencies (ZCCAs).
Official notification and Zakat deduction process
As per the notification, the amount is the Nisab of Zakat for the next year. The deduction is for savings accounts, profits and loss sharing accounts, and other such accounts that stand at or above this threshold.
According to the notification, Zakat will not be deducted if the account balance is less than Rs179,689 on the opening date of Ramzaan-ul-Mubarak 1446 A.H.
The process of deduction is governed by the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance, 1980, to maintain compliance in all the ZCCAs
These agencies are directed to credit the collected Zakat to the Central Zakat Account No. CZ-08, held at the Senate Bank of Pakistan (SBP).
The Nisab for Zakat last year was fixed at Rs135,179, whereas it was Rs103,159 in 2023. This upward movement indicates that the financial cut-off for compulsorily payable Zakat was higher.
With the new Zakat Nisab, the account holders eligible should have balances higher or lower than this level based on their obligations. The deduction will be used to fund welfare schemes and support those in need.
