In a move to protect children, Iraq has imposed a ban on the popular gaming platform, Roblox, citing serious child abuse and exploitation issues.
Iraq's federal ministry of communications announced the ban on Roblox on Sunday, stating that “the decision follows a detailed study and field monitoring that identified several security, social, and behavioural risks.”
The ministry further said the game allows direct communication between users, which can lead to exposing children and teenagers to exploitation and cyber‑extortion, stressing that the Roblox content is “incompatible with social values and traditions.”
The Iraqi ministry also issued a warning to the gaming platform, stating that excessive play leads to digital addiction and social isolation.
While in-game purchases have put additional financial strain on families, some fraudulent Roblox-impersonating websites are stealing personal data.
By banning Roblox, Iraq joins Turkey, Oman, China, and Qatar in restricting Roblox to protect children from harmful content. Turkey also banned Roblox on the same grounds in August 2024.
As concerns about virtual worlds and child safety have grown, authorities have taken strong action to protect young users, which is reflected in the Roblox ban in Iraq.
