In an effort to make it convenient and environment-friendly for women to mobilise, the Sindh government has announced around 1,000 electric bikes (e-bikes) for working women and female students in the province.

The announcement was made by Sindh Senior Minister for Information and Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon on Thursday, Business Recorder reported while citing a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) shared by Sindh Information Department.

The social media post was then corroborated in a statement issued by Chief Minister House, stating that Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah announced the acquisition of 1,000 pink electric motorcycles for women.

Heading a cabinet meeting, the Sindh CM also announced the procurement of double-decker buses and electric vehicles (EVs) for Karachi.

The remarkable development comes on the heels of the Sindh government and Dewan Group collaborating to launch 500 electric taxis in the province jointly.

The pink e-bikes will be distributed through an open and transparent balloting process.

“The initiative requires Rs300 million to be obtained outside the budget. The cabinet noted that an increasing number of women worldwide are opting for electric motorcycles as their primary mode of transport for daily commuting,” read the statement.

It was learned that the primary reasons behind this initiative include greater mobility, cost effectiveness compared to cars or public transport, eco-friendliness, and minimal maintenance.
