Following recent claims about Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited's (SNGPL) ceasing gas production in favour of the imported Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG), SNGPL clarified that the gas supply was shut down in parts of December because power plants were not using RLNG as expected.
It was also noted that all the gas-producing fields are functional and producing gas at the optimum pace. Power plants have been utilising RLNG according to their demand for the last 4-5 days.
The clarification outlined that pipelines of the SNGPL system can store up to a maximum of 2 days of unutilised RLNG supplies owing to the scarcity of a gas storage facility in the country.
The total gas cut registered by the SNGPL during the past four months is less than 100 MMCFD. However, the reported figure of 329 MMCFD curtailment was incorrect, according to The News.
The notable point is that the curtailment was undertaken during the low-demand segment of the year when it's hard for the Power sector to keep up with high consumer demand.
Citing the SNGPL clarification, the publication reported that the gas fields function normally during most of the year and the circular debt has also been addressed by adjusting gas prices.
