Sony has filed a lawsuit against Tencent Games, saying that the Chinese video game behemoth imitated one of the company’s biggest franchises, Horizon.
The complaint was filed in a California federal court. Sony claimed that Tencent’s new game, Light of Motiram, is a “slavish clone” of Sony’s Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West series.
Notably, the case, named Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC v. Tencent Holdings Ltd (Case No. 3:25-cv-06275), claims copyright infringement and trademark infringement, according to Reuters.
Sony claims that Light of Motiram looks a lot like Horizon characters, story, and art style, including the robot-animal enemies in the series, all to the point where players might be confused and it could harm the Horizon brand.
Light of Motiram has been under fire since it was first introduced to gamers. Many gamers have mentioned the apparent similarities between Horizon and Light of Motiram, which include screenshots and video clips containing a red-headed heroine, mechanical beasts, and what seems to be a Viking/sci-fi world, resembling a massive console RPG series.
Sony claims that the similarities are not by accident. It has been reported that Tencent approached Sony at one point about making a Horizon title together, but that did not materialise.
Sony claims Tencent moved forward on a Horizon project anyway, which Sony now argues is a copy of Horizon.
Legal experts say lawsuits like this can lead to settlements, redesigns, or even the blocking of a game’s release. For now, the case puts the future of Light of Moritam in question.
