Streaming giant has done away with Boss Fight Entertainment, the studio behind its mobile game "Squid Game: Unleashed", reportedly under a strategy shift for its video gaming unit.

The closure of the studio behind Squid Game was confirmed by its co-founder and former CEO, David Rippy, in a LinkedIn post on Thursday.

"Rough news, for sure, but I'm very grateful for the time we had at Netflix," Rippy said.

Netflix, having deeply invested in advertising and video games to diversify its revenue streams, acquired Boss Fight Entertainment in 2022 to expand its offering, according to Reuters.

"After 10+ great years working at Boss Fight, the last few as part of Netflix, the time has come for the studio to close down," read a LinkedIn post by Netflix Director Game Development David Luehmann.

The positive side of the story is that Boss Fight's two games, "Netflix Stories" and "Squid Game: Unleashed", will remain available on the streaming platform.

Netflix, which appointed Alain Tascan as president of games last year, is said to have a new strategy focused on party, narrative, kids and mainstream games.

During its earnings call earlier this week, Netflix Co-CEO Greg Peters touted "Squid Game: Unleashed" as an exemplary type of narrative games it would like to make, inspired by its own TV shows.
