In a landmark move towards digitalisation, Telenor Pakistan has signed Pakistan’s first-ever tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) to implement advanced metering at its Base Transceiver Station (BTS) sites across Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJ&K).

This progressive initiative intends to empower societies by efficiently utilising advanced metering technology to improve energy efficiency and ensure consumption precision.

The tripartite agreement unites Telenor Pakistan, the Government of AJ&K and SBEEC in a smart metering solution, allowing both consumers and the power distribution company to observe electricity consumption in real-time.

This innovative approach ensures precise billing, reduces energy loss by observing usage patterns and supports data-driven decision-making to streamline resource utilisation.

This progressive step aligns with Telenor Pakistan’s broader vision to promote technology-driven solutions for economic sustainability. The tripartite MoU was signed at Telenor Pakistan’s Campus 345 in Islamabad.

The attendees included Telenor Pakistan’s Chief Technical Officer Awais Vohra, Government of AJ&K Secretary, Secretary of Electricity Department Irshad Ahmed Qureshi, and top officials of the respective organisations.

This MoU marks yet another significant milestone in Telenor’s journey to empower societies and pave the way for technological evolution.

Addressing the attendees, Telenor Pakistan Chief Technical Officer Awais Vohra stated: “This pilot project, the first-ever collaboration with any DISCO, marks a significant step in the digital transformation of the energy sector. We thank the AJK government for its pragmatic and forward-looking approach to adopting new technologies. This initiative ensures real-time consumption data monitoring, drives digitalization, and addresses system deficiencies to reduce losses impacting consumers. It highlights the importance of public-private collaboration in advancing digital solutions.”

Irshad Ahmed Qureshi, Government of Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJ&K) Secretary, Electricity Department, mentioned: “We are delighted to partner with Telenor Pakistan and SBEEC on this pioneering initiative. Smart metering represents a transformative approach to energy efficiency and this collaboration is a testament to our shared vision of leveraging technology for the socio-economic upliftment of the region. We look forward to the successful implementation of this pilot project and its potential for scaling.”

This project initiative will likely serve as a great model for scaling similar initiatives across Pakistan. Telenor Pakistan is constantly setting new benchmarks in technological advancement, pioneering impressive projects that value communities and accelerate the country’s progress.
