In what appears to be discouraging new smartphone purchases, US President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 25% import tariff on all smartphone manufacturers.

The enforcement of hefty tariffs comes on the heels of his earlier demand for Apple to move its iPhone production to the US or face the same taxes.

These tariffs would be applied not only to Apple but also to other prominent smartphone maker, including Samsung and Google, as per the remarks made by Trump during a press conference at the White House.

It's worth adding that the taxes in consideration will also be imposed on manufacturer that assembles smartphones outside the US.

The development is purportedly in line with the Trump administration's aim to implement new tariffs by the end of June, whose insights into enforcement and possible exemptions remain to be clarified.

Trump's afore-cited comments indicate a broader policy aimed at imposing sector-specific tariffs, which were initially designed for goods imports from China.

Furthermore, the new US administration had previously exempted smartphones and consumer electronics from these tariffs, with Trump later suggesting that the exemptions would be temporary.
