Vivo’s upcoming foldable smartphone, the Vivo X Fold 4, is expected to launch in the second quarter of this year.

Meanwhile, according to tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS), Vivo is poised to significantly change the design of its upcoming foldable smartphone.

Vivo X Fold 4 to ditch in-screen fingerprint sensor

Unlike its previous foldable, which featured dual in-screen fingerprint sensors for both internal and external displays, the Vivo X Fold 4 might feature a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Vivo’s earlier foldable, including the first-generation X Fold and X Fold+, utilised optical-type in-screen fingerprint scanners. However, the Vivo X Fold 2 featured an ultrasonic-type scanner.

The tipster also claimed that the shift to side-facing fingerprint sensors is driven by the need to reduce the thickness of upcoming foldables as this design change could enable foldables to achieve a thickness of around 8mm.

Vivo X Fold 4 specs (rumoured)

According to leaks surfaced earlier, the Vivo X Fold 4 will be backed by a massive 6,000mah battery with wireless charging support.

The device is expected to boast a Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and an IPX8 level of water resistance.

As part of its camera capabilities, the Vivo X Fold 4 will likely feature a 50MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 50MP periscope telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.

Notably, other smartphones from Chinese tech giants, including Oppo Find N5, Honor Magic V4, and Huawei Mate X7 are also expected to be equipped with a side-facing fingerprint sensor.
