In a major push to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country, Zhuhai Comking Electric Co Ltd and E-Trade Nexus Private Ltd have teamed up to expand the electric vehicle charging network across Pakistan.

The partnership is believed to expedite the transition to environment-friendly transportation, as it will result in a myriad of EV charging piles and stations slated to be installed nationwide by the Chinese company, The News reported.

The collaborative effort also marks a progressive milestone in fulfilling Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s green energy vision. E-Trade Nexus Director of Global Business Najamul Ghani commended the recent 44% cut in electricity tariffs for EV charging stations, fixing the per unit rate of electricity to Rs39.7, down from Rs71.1, to make EV charging affordable and accessible.

“This initiative aims to promote EV adoption, reduce transportation costs and decrease the country’s reliance on imported fossil fuels,” Ghani said, noting that the reduced power tariff is expected to drop travel costs by up to threefold compared to non-electric vehicles powered by fuel.

To facilitate businesses willing to operate EV charging stations countrywide, the government has also introduced an online portal, simplifying the process of registration and approval for the establishment of stations. It was also learned that the country is committed to attaining 30% electric mobility by the year 2030.

Estimated to save around $165 million in annual fuel import costs, the primary target of this transition will be two- and three-wheeled vehicles which account for the biggest chunk of transportation in the country.
