Notepad, a staple app in Microsoft's operating system since 1983, has undergone significant transformations in recent Windows 11 updates. These updates have infused new life into this classic app, making it an ideal choice for quick note-taking and writing tasks.

While power users may prefer Notepad++ or OneNote, Notepad's simplicity and latest features make it a solid contender.

Tabs

Perhaps the greatest feature of Notepad is that it features tabs. Starting in March 2023, this allows users to manage multiple notes without too much trouble.

One can open multiple notes simultaneously, easily switch between notes with the help of a tab bar, rearrange tabs using drag and drop functionality, close the individual tabs or all tabs at one time.

Emoji support

Notepad also provides emoji support and, by using it, users can insert emojis with the Windows + period (.) shortcut.

This feature provides a provision to search categories find the particular emoji and include visual creativity in their note-taking.

Spell-check and autocorrect

Spell-check in the application, launched July 2024 turns underlined misspelled words in red and provides correction suggestions and auto-corrects most common typos.

Users can enable spelling in Notepad. Under settings, they can click on the words that are underlined to get suggestions for correction.

Dark Mode

Dark Mode, introduced in December 2021, Notepad changes its background to dark and its text to light. That cuts down the eye strain when reading/typing. It's something users can enable in the Notepad settings when that feature is toggled.

Right to left text support

Other features include word wrap, enabling font customisation, text zooming, and find and replace. It supports various keyboard shortcuts which include: Ctrl + N to open a new window, Ctrl + A for selecting all the text, and F5 to insert the current date and time.

The users are enabled to alter the font, size, and style of Notepad or even alter the background colour. Users are also allowed to turn the spell check as well as autocorrect on/off. Customisation options can be accessed through the settings where you could browse through the different options present.
