Owing to persistence in the ongoing internet crisis across Pakistan, it is believed that the government is less likely to ensure the completion of the 5G spectrum and its subsequent rollout in the country in 2025.
Besides attributing internet disruptions to excessive use of virtual private networks (VPNs) and power outages, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), along with the IT ministry, is of the view that the 5G spectrum auction, slated to be conducted in April 2025, will be executed successfully.
As Dawn reported, the incumbent government is ambitious about launching 5G services nationwide, hoping that the next-gen network will pave the way for massive revenue inflows in the form of licence fees.
PTA-Huawei partnership for 5G services in Pakistan
In this regard, the telecom authority recently inked a deal with Huawei to train its workforce, appointed in the division of 5G-related services.
As part of the agreement, the tech giant will channel its expertise in high-end broadband technologies towards PTA officials.
Compared to earlier generations including 4G, a recent PTA report for 2023-2024 outlines that 5G technology is more energy-efficient, as it consumes less power with sites transmitting equal measure of data.
“The data transmission limitations of 3G and 4G networks held back these advancements, but with 5G’s ultra-fast connection speeds, the possibilities are now boundless,” the PTA report said.
The notable point is that 4G technology with its frequencies of 2300 and 2600MHz surpassed 3G, which relied on 2100MHz. The most significant property of 5G is that it would operate at 2300, 2600, 3300, 3500 and even 6000 MHz frequencies, while the country is planning to release the 3300 MHz frequency ahead of the full-fledged launch of 5G.
