Google now makes it faster for users to silence their phone with Android 16 while also adding back one of the button's most criticised functions with a one-tap Do Not Disturb (DND) button in the Quick Settings menu, a change many users have been waiting for.
When Google introduced its new "Modes" system with Android 15, it got rid of the button that brings up an immediate DND toggle in the Quick Settings menu.
Google Android 16 new feature
Users were required to open the Modes menu and use DND there, which made it feel like a bit more of a long way to go to complete a simple action.
In the first beta of Android 16 QPR1, Google has returned the quick-toggle method in a more intelligent way.
Android 16's one-tap Do Not Disturb (DND) button
In the new Quick Settings layout for Android 16 as part of the Material 3 Expressive redesign, users can now get to DND mode with a single tap (assuming they tap the icon on the left of the Modes button).
Tapping the rest of the button still opens the full Modes menu The slight change to the structure makes it faster and easier to go to DND mode without one more step.
In order to maximise this functionality, users need to set the DND duration to "Until you turn it off" or at a specific time. If it's set to "Ask every time", then a pop-up may appear and slow down the process.
Google has included the same dual functionality on the Bluetooth toggle also. A tap on the icon will turn Bluetooth on or off, while tapping the rest of the button opens the other settings.
Unfortunately, this dual function does not yet extend to the Internet button.
