Google's next Android 16 update looks to be an impressive refresh, with plenty of new features and design changes already in play in the latest Canary channel builds.

From more customisation options to more enhanced security features, Android users will see great improvements in all areas of daily use.

Google Android 16 features

Google is conducting tests on Android 16 in the Canary channel, and with the latest builds, there is a clear sign of a refreshed platform. Here is a breakdown of some new features and design updates recently discovered:

Edge-To-edge settings app

The Settings app has now gone from a limited screen width to being stretched edge-to-edge, with a very cohesive simple layout. The status bar now integrates well into the design and feels modern.

Enhanced dark theme

Google improved the dark theme with a stronger storyline to deliver more consistency across menus & apps, as we expect to have a better experience viewing so many notifications and responses.

90/10 split-screen mode

In a YouTube video about multitasking, Android users got to see a new split-screen ratio allowing for the ability to run one app at 90% of the screen size and another app at 10%, making quick reference possible without very much open screen.

M3 expressive users widget

The Users widget has made a comeback; while it is still the same feature, it is certainly Mario-esque inexpression style (Material You – M3) in appearance.

Low-light mode for screen savers

Screen savers have also added low-light or low-light mode support, eliminating glare while in the dark; they aim to cause less eye strain on tired or fatigued eyes (even though they are a % flash).

More Advanced Parental Controls

With Android 16, Google Family Link has increased parental controls for improved at-home and led activities.

Set screen time limits

  • Limit or block your apps, or set limits for each app separately.
  • Set downtime time (like bedtime hours).
  • Filter out adult content in Chrome and Google Search.

Always-on display graphically

There will be a graphic in the always-on display settings page to make understanding customisation easier.

Brighter HDR

As announced on the Canary channel, Android 16 will permit brighter HDR standards, improving the video and photo experience on supported devices.

Mobile network security improvements

Mobile network security now sits at the start of the Network & Internet settings. The entry-level work-in-progress Wi-Fi feature helps users avoid insecure 2G networks while still enabling emergency calls.

Redesigned widgets panel

Widgets have got a facelift, now featuring a fresh “Featured” tab to showcase popular and recommended choices.

Lockscreen widgets / hub mode

Lockscreen widgets that debuted on the Pixel Tablet are also coming to phones. After enabling, the user can swipe left to access hub mode from the lock screen.

Minimal icons

Android 16 offers themed “Minimal” icons for a cleaner, more uniform home screen. A new “Create” option will also allow a user to customise their look.

App “Remove” shortcut

Long-pressing an app on the home screen now includes a Remove option, making app management faster.

Accessibility improvements

Accessibility tools includes Live Transcribe, Sound Amplifier, and Sound Notifications, have been grouped into a dedicated Quick Settings category for easier access.
