In a significant development, Anthropic has integrated a new memory feature into its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Claude, enabling it to remember previous conversations when prompted by the user.
The launch comes amid intensifying competition between Anthropic and OpenAI.
The new memory feature allows seamless project continuation and easy reference to earlier discussions without starting over.
The feature is available across desktop, mobile, and web and supports distinct projects and workspaces.
It is currently offered for Claude’s Max, Team, and Enterprise subscription tiers, with plans to expand to other tiers soon.
How does Claude’s memory feature work?
Users can activate the memory feature by navigating to "Settings" under their profile and switching on the "Search and reference chats" option.
Unlike OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Claude’s memory does not build a persistent user profile; instead, it retrieves and references past chats only on request.
Anthropic spokesperson Ryan Donegan emphasised that this approach prioritises user control and privacy, distancing it from ongoing debates about ChatGPT’s continuous memory function.
While the feature has been praised for enabling personalised responses and smoother workflows, some industry observers remain cautious about potential psychological and ethical implications.
For complex, long-term projects requiring consistent context, Claude’s memory could significantly improve productivity and user experience.
