Following horribe backlash to GPT-5's performance, OpenAI has revived the access to its GPT-4o model for ChatGPT Plus subscribers.

The revival of GPT-4o comes after countless complaints regarding the new GPT model’s conversational style and an alleged decline in writing quality.

Earlier this week, OpenAI introduced GPT-5, endorsing it as its most advanced AI model yet. The update removed the option for users to select between models, automatically defaulting to GPT-5.

The new release features a “real-time router” that offers a switch between a more efficient model for straightforward requests and a reasoning version which is particularly capable of handling complex tasks.

Soon after the launch, online platforms like Reddit were flooded with criticism from users who preferred GPT-4o’s responses.

Many described GPT-5’s replies as “sterile,” “brief,” and lacking personality. Some users expressed a strong emotional connection to GPT-4o, considering it a consistent and engaging assistant.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed these concerns during a Reddit AMA, acknowledging that while GPT-5 has tremendous potential in most benchmarks, the company “underestimated how much certain aspects of GPT-4o matter” to users. Altman later confirmed on X that GPT-4o would be restored as an option for Plus subscribers.

Nevertheless, OpenAI is said to be focusing on completing the GPT-5 rollout and adjusting its tone to offer better conversational experience.
