In a significant stride towards digital transformation, the government of Pakistan is gearing up to replace traditional meter readers with a mobile app, “Apna Meter Apni Reading.”

The purported meter reading app will allow electricity consumers to submit their own meter readings directly from their smartphones. This initiative is believed to enhance accuracy and transparency in power billing.

As reported by Phoneworld, the initiative was approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. It will target Pakistan’s power Distribution Companies (Discos), excluding K-Electric.

The app is coming in the face of years of complaints regarding inflated electricity bills, most of which take place out of human error or malpractice during manual readings. Now, with the impending meter reading app, the government seems to be empowering users to take control.

The Power Division has been instructed to develop and launch the app within weeks. The app will support five languages: English, Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashtu, and Balochi, ensuring accessibility for consumers across various regions.

Electricity users will just have to photograph their meters and submit them using the app. This photographed data will be used to calculate monthly bills.

A similar initiative is said to be tested in LESCO areas and brought fruitful results. Early trials reduced billing complaints by nearly 30% and improved detection of power theft. Given this revamp, government officials are eager and willing to replicate this success nationwide.
