In a big move which seems to be a strategic one, Apple has reportedly sidelined plans to upgrade the Vision Pro VR glasses in favour of its cutting-edge AI smart glasses to challenge similar offerings from Meta.
Citing a fresh report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, TechCrunch reported that the tech giant has reallocated staff from the Vision Pro project to work on its new AI smart glasses initiatives.
That said, the company is said to be developing at least two types of AI glasses, each with its own set of distinct arrays of features and capabilities.
Apple's new AI smart glasses
In light of reports making waves on the internet, Apple's first AI smart glasses are nicknamed N50, likely to pair instantly with an iPhone and forgo its own display. The iPhone maker also plans to showcase these smart glasses as soon as next year, with a targeted release in 2027.
The second version of Apple's AI smart glasses will include a display. This would probably be a direct rival to Meta's recently unveiled Ray-Ban Display smart glasses.
It's noteworthy that Apple had initially planned to release the display-equipped smart glasses in 2028, but it is now accelerating the development process.
In spite of this massive shift, analysts view Apple as still lagging behind Meta, which launched its first smart glasses in 2021.
