Apple is reportedly preparing for a major Mac lineup refresh in 2026, with reports suggesting several new models powered by the company’s next-generation M5 chip.
Rumours suggest the lineup will include newer versions of the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and Mac Studio over the next year.
Reportedly, the first M5 MacBook Pro could not arrive until late 2025, based on sources with knowledge of macOS Tahoe development and internal testing claiming that a Mac model designated J704 is in advanced testing.
Since the last MacBook Pro carried the code J604 as its internal code, this new tag suggests the next generation.
According to Gadget360, Apple is testing J704 with macOS 26.0.2, which might suggest a short window before this computer product is released.
There have also been retail shortages of the current MacBook Pro, which is also a sign of impending product refreshes or new products.
Additionally, an unreleased MacBook Pro model number was recently filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), supporting the possibility of a late 2025 launch for the M5 variant.
The upcoming M5 MacBook Air models, which are being referred to internally as J813 and J815, will likely follow within a few months of the Pro models in January or February 2026.
Similarly, the M5 Air models, like the M4 generation, should be available in both 13- and 15-inch versions and use macOS 26.2.
Apple is also currently developing higher-end models of the MacBook Pro, the M5 Pro and M5 Max, which are internally designated J714 and J716. These are tipped to launch in the first quarter of 2026, maintaining the 14-inch and 16-inch designs.
Apple plans to roll out M5-powered Mac mini and Mac Studio models, expected to arrive by summer 2026, along with possible iMac updates mentioned in system references.
