With global domination of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), BYD has made its way into Pakistan with its first-ever PHEV pickup, the BYD Shark 6, heralding the transformation of the local automotive landscape through smart and sustainable mobility.

As Pakistan embarks on the transition to electric vehicles (EVs), BYD held an experiential workshop in Karachi to showcase its Super Dual Mode (DM) Hybrid Technology as used in the Shark 6, drawing together automotive minds, media, and members of the automotive sector, all with a view to building towards the electric vehicle future of Pakistan.

The BYD Shark 6 is not an ordinary hybrid; it utilises an asymmetric combination of a 29.58 kWh battery paired with a 1.5L gasoline engine to optimise performance.

It produces 436 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque and achieves a drive range of over 800 km at a fuel efficiency of 50 km per litre, making it the most powerful pickup in the local market.

Experts at the event discussed important differences between PHEVs and hybrid vehicles. Where most hybrids are mainly designed to operate on gasoline, plug-in hybrids rely on a charge from an electric outlet and can drive long distances depending on the battery alone.

PHEVs produce the most carbon-free fuel savings and lower carbon emissions.

Moreover, the Shark 6 can reduce tailpipe CO₂ emissions by as much as 62%, which is important for the major cities of Karachi and Lahore.

“This is more than just a new vehicle—it’s a mindset shift,” said BYD Pakistan’s VP of Sales, Danish Khaliq.
