In a bid to establish itself as a dominant contender in the Chinese market, the world's leading China-based automaker BYD showcased an all-new electric vehicle (EV) technology to super-charge EVs.
According to the company, "super e-platform", the new EV charging technology, can charge EVs as quickly as it takes to pump gas.
BYD also announced the establishment of its first-ever, full-fledged EV charging network across China which would be based on super e-platform.
Reuters reported that the EV charging platform is capable of peak charging speeds of 1,000 kilowatts (kW), meaning the EVs getting its five-minute charge can travel around 400 km (249 miles), founder Wang Chuanfu said at an event streamed live from the company's Shenzhen headquarters.
This calibre of EV charging speed is said to be twice as fast as Tesla's superchargers, which offer charging speeds of up to 500 kW in their latest version.
"In order to completely solve our user's charging anxiety, we have been pursuing a goal to make the charging time of electric vehicles as short as the refuelling time of petrol vehicles," Wang said.
Besides fierce competition among prominent EV manufacturers to develop sophisticated EV tech, the focus in the EV sphere appears to be shifting to the EVs' fast charging.
