Shortly after the country stepped into limelight for its ambitions of a crypto-friendly regime, top governments officials have reiterated that the ban on cryptocurrencies in Pakistan is still in place.
During a National Assembly Finance Committee meeting, Finance Secretary Imdadullah Bosal clarified that cryptocurrency has not been legalised in Pakistan.
He confirmed that neither the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) nor the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) recognises cryptocurrency as legal tender.
The National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance also raised concerns about the newly formed Pakistan Crypto Council (PCC) despite a lack of acceptance by the central bank, calling on officials from the energy ministry to elaborate the government’s stance on cryptocurrency.
Part of the criticism was also drawn to the allocation of 2,000 megawatts of electricity to crypto-related operations.
The allotment of resources to an industry declared illegal by the central bank was also questioned by some NA members, warning that unregulated crypto activities could lead to foreign currency outflows.
