Due to Tensor G4, Pixel 8 Pro's Feature Drop could counter baseline Pixel 9

Google has come in the hot water for powering its upcoming Pixel 9 series with a Tensor G4 chip, the most trivial upgrade ever lodged on the Pixel series.

That is because the Tensor G4 chip possesses the TPU, called "Rio", that the Tensor G4 had. Moreover, the latest chip's clock speed, too, matches with that of the third-generation chip and the processor registered no enhancements in its AI capabilities either.

In light of these Pixel 9 weaknesses, the Pixel 8 is on the verge of receiving AI features that the base Pixel 9 would support.

Tensor G4 and Pixel 9

The AI processing power of the Pixel 9 is said to remain the same as the Pixel 8 because of the CPU and GPU upgrades in the Tensor G4.

Moreover, the core TPU — a hardware component responsible for overseeing on-device AI — of Pixel 9 is also the same as that of Pixel 8.

The tech giant has been inconsistent with the Feature Drops it releases for its devices. Given that, some older models fall fortunate to get new features while some highly-touted features like Zoom Enhance don't come out of the pipeline.

The only significant difference is the RAM, as the Pixel 9 is expected to boast 12GB of RAM on standard models, while the Pro models of the Pixel 9 series will be equipped with 16GB RAM.

Compared to the standard Pixel 8 variants, the Pixel 9 could have a slight upper hand, but it seems that the Pixel 8 Pro would be able to match the Pixel 9 in terms of performance with its 12GB RAM.
